Volunteer with us!
WHAT IS VOLUNTEERING LIKE?
Volunteering with us is a great opportunity to get involved in local sustainability and the LUC community while working on your kitchen skills!
As a Community Kitchen volunteer, you will eventually participate in all 4 shifts: market pickup, cooking, serving, and cleaning. After you sign up, either for the whole block or only one or two sessions, our HR Officer will post a block-long schedule that takes into account schedule constraints and special requests. After a training on the shifts and procedures, you’ll be ready to go!
The cooking, serving, and cleaning shifts will be led by a board member, who will work alongside you. All volunteers for any given week get that week’s dinner for free. If you are suddenly unable to make a scheduled shift, you are responsible for finding your replacement.
Check out the shift descriptions below, and open the guides for more details.

MARKET PICKUP
Monday, 4:00pm-6:30pm
2-6 people
For the market shift, volunteers will go to the Haagse Markt (by bike or by tram) just before it closes. They will ask the vendors for produce that would otherwise get thrown out. The volunteers will then bring the veggies back to AvB, do a quick inventory of the produce collected and store it in the Community Kitchen.
COOKING
Tuesday, 4:00pm-7:15pm
6-8 people
For the cooking shift, volunteers will meet in the Community Kitchen to cook the meal for that evening. Based on what produce was collected at the market the previous day, the supervising board member will have created a menu ahead of time and will be responsible for directing the volunteers.
SERVING
Tuesday, 7:00pm-8:15pm
4-5 people
For the serving shift, volunteers will meet at the Kitchen to serve the dinner to our guests. This includes setting up the counter, taking payments, answering questions about the menu, and also distributing leftovers. In the serving shift you will be the face of the Commiunity Kitchen!
CLEANING
Tuesday, 7:30pm-9:00pm
3-4 people
For the cleaning shift, volunteers will meet in the kitchen to clean up after dinner. The team will be responsible for doing dishes, cleaning the kitchen, and the eating area. But don't worry: we have an industrial-style dishwasher, so the dishes part will not be as labor-intensive as you might be thinking. ;)
